Garden of Witches Sil, the Thread Witch
A sewing witch with scissors bigger than she is, and a contract she intends to keep.
Sil is the entire control scheme. Garden of Witches does not unlock a second protagonist. You will spend every run in her cottage, in her Book, and in her slightly too-large shoes. Understanding Sil as a character is optional. Understanding Sil as a kit is not.
Who she is
The intro crawl is the short version. Witches were born in a boundless darkness. Nahatra dreamed a Garden and let them in. The deal was a yearly tea party so the Dream Witch stays asleep. Sil is the one who still believes in deals.
She looks like a sewing doll on purpose: stitches, ribbon, scissors, a cottage full of thread spools and a cat who talks back. Producer Yim Taehee told interviewers they rejected broom-and-cauldron clichés and rejected an East-Asian-themed draft that did not fit. Thread stayed because Sil’s job is connection. She is the stitch between witches who would rather nap, farm, or graffiti than host.
Canele is already on the quilt when the nightmare tentacle punches the wall. The cat will not save the Garden. The scissors might.
How she fights
Sil has four verbs on a good day: Scissors, Spell, Spell, dash. A Special Skill gauge sits on top if you equipped one. She plants her feet on melee swings. Early reviewers called that clunky. They were not wrong in 2025. 1.0 answered by giving each scissors pair its own crit rule so the basic attack is allowed to be a personality instead of a placeholder until Fireball comes off cooldown.
That is why the scissors tier list exists as a Sil page in disguise. Giant Sil, Magic Sil, Broken Sil, and Singing Sil are different women who share a portrait.
Dash i-frames are her real defense. Counter is the grown-up defense. Health is a blue yarn ball because of course it is. When it hits zero you wake up in the cottage, you spend EXP, and you try a different stitch. There is no partner to revive you. Steam lists single-player only.
The cottage loop
- Wake up. Ignore Canele’s editorial.
- Open the Armory. Pick scissors and two spells. This is 1.0’s big quality-of-life gift — see the Armory planner.
- Open the Book if last run’s curse is still lingering.
- Leave. Fight a domain. Beat a witch. Come home.
- Spend levels. Repeat until the tea party has enough chairs.
The cottage is also where chapter select appears after you have cleared far enough. That is how you farm unlocks without listening to Fiena’s picnic a twelfth time. Use skip on retries; the game will not skip new lines.
Why players bounce off her
- She is cute, so people expect a cozy game, then Abigail’s sickle arrives.
- She is slow on the swing, so people mash Fireball and never learn Giant finishers.
- She is a stitcher, so people wait for a second playable witch. There is not one.
If you bounced, try Magic Scissors on keyboard and mouse for a night. If you still bounce, the game may simply want more pattern patience than you wanted to give a sewing doll. That is allowed. If you stay, Sil is one of the more legible action-roguelike heroines of 2026: what you see (thread, scissors, a house full of unfinished work) is what the systems are about.
Reading her against the rest of the coven
Fiena is appetite. Abigail is solitude. Rims & Berry are noise. Nahatra is the bed everyone else is standing on. Sil is the only one who will knock. That is not lore flavor; it is why the run structure is “leave the house, fight a person, come home” instead of “descend a hole.” Cult of the Lamb comparisons in the press are about the loop, not about cults. Hades comparisons are about builds. Lost Ark was named by the director as an action feel reference. Sil is the original part.
When you are done being sentimental, go fight. The combat guide is Sil as a verb. The witch roster is everyone she still has to invite. Nahatra is the reason the invitation matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about Garden of Witches 1.0.
Is Sil the only playable character in Garden of Witches?
Yes. You fight as the Thread Witch on every run. There is no character select.
Why does Sil use scissors?
Thread and sewing are her motif — connection, mending, dragging a coven to one table. Team Tapas rejected generic witch props on purpose.
Who is Canele?
Sil's talking cat in the cottage hub. Not playable, not a boss.
Where should I take Sil first?
The getting started guide and a starter kit from the Armory planner.
