Garden of Witches Imprints

Level a skill, then pick one of three rewrites. That pick is the build.

Imprints

Imprints are the 1.0 answer to “why does every Fireball run feel the same.” They are not extra damage on a tooltip. They are a fork. Team Tapas said it in the launch notes: imprints now let you choose new ways to use a spell or weapon, not just a bigger number on the same animation.

You earn the fork by ranking the skill (the Book still talks about raising an attribute to a threshold — treat it as “this tool is level 3”). Elite rooms and some boss clears pay imprint tokens. Then you pick one of three imprints on that tool. You do not get all three. That is the whole design.

Weapon imprints worth planning around

Broken Scissors — Hunger. Max Sharpness plus 100%. If you gain no Sharpness for two seconds, you lose the bar. This is a contract. Ambush, Cat’s Eye Ring, and any on-hit Sharpness tap make the contract easy. Sightseeing makes it a wipe.

Broken Scissors — Frenzy. Attack speed scales with Sharpness. Hunger plus Frenzy is the “I am a blender” kit. If you cannot keep the bar up, Frenzy is a dead node.

Magic Scissors — Threading. Huge damage cut, extra homing. You are no longer a sniper; you are a tracking storm. Take it on Rims & Berry and swamp waves. Skip it if you wanted the fat piercing crit and you are aiming with a mouse on a stationary boss.

Magic Scissors — Downpour. Extra projectile once Charge is high. This is the “I actually hold the button” imprint. Keyboard-only players who tap will hate it. Mouse players who charge past gauge one will wonder why they ever tapped.

Giant and default scissors get imprints that lean into combo finishers and Sharpness efficiency. If the node says it deletes the thing that makes your Spell work (for example an old Slash imprint that stripped threads, flowers, and crows), check whether 1.0 moved that effect onto a relic instead. Several “delete summons for damage” effects were promoted to relics so summon kits could live.

Spell imprints

Fireball is the teaching example. One path is a charged brick. The other is a burst of smaller shots that farm on-hit relics. Same icon. If you pick the brick, stop stacking pellet relics. If you pick the pellets, stop playing Fireball like a sniper rifle.

Ambush imprints generally add to the Sharpness payday or the radius. Take them in melee houses. They are wasted next to a pure Magic Scissors poke kit that never jumps in.

Counter imprints can widen the 0.4-second window or the punish radius. Counter is already a 17-second boss tool. Imprinting it is how you make a defensive Spell into a phase-change weapon. Do not imprint Counter if you never press it.

Shadow Surge / Butterfly Walk imprints are how crows and flowers become a kit instead of a visual. 1.0 locked those summons to these spells. If you want the zoo, imprint here, not on a random Scissors node.

Special Skill imprints

Special Skills lost some of their “max power the moment you pick them” energy. Gauges were standardized (charge per second, 100% bar, 100% cost on the big button). Imprints put the personality back. Echo of the Swamp is the famous case: it used to auto-cast your second Spell on Scissors crits and then offer a 10-second double-damage spend. After the overhaul the base kit is a short haste window and the imprint is where the swamp weirdness lives.

If a YouTuber still shows the old Echo, they are on a patch that is not 1.0. Believe the Book.

How to not brick a run

  1. Decide the identity in the Armory — see the Armory planner.
  2. Route toward the Imprint room even if the elite is scary. Challenge Mode without an imprint is a handicap. Story chapter four without an imprint is how people rage-quit Abigail’s cousin.
  3. Pick the imprint that matches the button you already press, not the one with the biggest orange number.
  4. If two imprints on two different skills both want your hold finger, you have a clumsy kit. Change one Spell.

Imprints are why 1.0 feels like a different game from the synergy months. Tags told you to collect matching words. Imprints tell you to commit. For the numbers they sit on, read scissors and spells. For finished sentences, read best builds. For the patch that created this system, read the 1.0 notes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Garden of Witches 1.0.

When do I unlock imprints in Garden of Witches?

After you rank a weapon, spell, or special skill to the imprint threshold (treat it as level 3) and spend an imprint from an elite, boss, or imprint room.

Can I equip all three imprints on one spell?

No. You pick one of three. That fork is the build.

Do imprints replace relics?

No. Imprints rewrite the skill. Relics multiply it. Use both — see relics.

Why does Echo of the Swamp feel weaker than in videos?

0.9.2 / 1.0 lowered the base and moved the identity into imprints. Old clips are pre-overhaul.
